The George Family: Lifelong Stewards of the National Parks

For Penny and Bill George, national parks are a lifelong inspiration. Penny spent two unforgettable summers in the 1960s working in Yellowstone National Park, forging a deep connection to its wildlife and beauty. Bill, whose childhood was filled with visits to the Great Smoky Mountains and Everglades, shares Penny’s passion for national parks.

Together with their children and their friends, they’ve traveled to parks across the country, from the Grand Canyon to Joshua Tree, always in awe of the landscapes that define America’s natural heritage.

Bill and Penny recognized that these places they love faced threats, and that once a place is developed, it’s gone forever.

Their desire to preserve national parks for all to enjoy led them to partner with the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA). They saw NPCA’s experience in coalition building, grassroots advocacy and navigating political landscapes as an effective outlet for their philanthropy.

Through the George Family Foundation, they are helping to safeguard Yellowstone National Park with a matching grant, ensuring that every donation goes twice as far to protect one of America’s most iconic landscapes.

Penny and Bill see national parks as more than just places to visit — they are treasures that inspire a sense of belonging, peace, and responsibility. They believe in the power of parks to connect people to nature, community, and each other. By supporting NPCA, they are ensuring future generations can experience the same beauty and inspiration they have cherished for decades.
